Purrfect Pet Sitting has made yet another trip around the sun and is celebrating it’s 16th birthday! I started this business on August 4, 2000. Never in a million years could I have imagined how far this business would come!
I was the first professional pet sitting service in Rensselaer County. It was an uphill battle getting the word out that pet sitting was actually an option to begging your friends, family or neighbors. Some of my friends and family thought I was nuts for starting a “pet sitting” business. I heard “oh how cute” many times when I told people what I did.
But here we are 16 years later!
I have learned a lot in sixteen years. People tell me I should write a book because they don’t believe some of our stories. These are just a few important things I’ve learned:
1. We can’t love your pet more than you do
We screen our clients pretty well. We don’t accept everyone that contacts us. But every once in a while we encounter a pet whose care just isn’t up to our standards. It makes us sad and we do everything we can to make sure the time we spend with them is quality time and they get the best possible care we can give. We find we must try to detach ourselves when those situations do arise.
2. Good help is hard to find
I’ve shared a lot of my hiring stories in the past but did you know that for every one person I hire I wade through approximately 200-300 applications?! It truly is like finding a needle in a haystack. It takes a special kind of person to be a pet sitter and I’m happy to say we have an incredible team of people here at Purrfect Pet Sitting!
3. Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on our part
We get that emergencies come up and we do everything in our power to assist people when there is a true emergency. If I had a dollar for every time I heard about the ‘free’ help bailing on people I could easily retire. That doesn’t mean we should be expected to drop everything and run because your plans fell through. I have learned over the years that whenever we did this we rarely heard from the client again because they went back to relying on free help. We want to be your first choice, not your last resort!
Thank you SO much for all your support! Without you, we wouldn’t be able to do something we truly enjoy for a living!
In case we haven’t mentioned it lately. We LOVE our jobs and hope to continue pet sitting and dog walking services for many years to come!
