Anyone that owns pets know that with pets come the occasional accident. Our home is no exception. We have two dogs and three cats so it’s inevitable. We are used to small accidents since our youngest dog, Parker, tends to ‘piddle’ when he gets excited. Those are no problem to clean up and don’t usually require a lot of effort. Recently however Parker couldn’t wait to go out one morning and he peed on our living room carpet.
I tried to clean it but due to the volume we just weren’t able to get it all out of the carpet. I tried everything. I saturated it with Nature’s Miracle and then steam cleaned the carpet with white vinegar, I steam cleaned with Febreze carpet cleaner, I ground a box of baking soda into the carpet and let it sit for a day. NOTHING helped. I thought for sure I was going to have to throw the carpet away. Being that our oldest dog Zach is 15 1/2 years old we were hoping to hold out on replacing the carpet a few more years.
So, how do you get the smell of dog urine out of the carpet?
I went to the experts and I posted on a pet sitter’s group I belong to on Facebook. The majority agreed that our carpet was destroyed and disposal was the best option. One person mentioned Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer. As it would happen a client had moved and she gave me an almost full bottle of this product that she couldn’t take with her. I saturated the carpet and let it sit for several hours then used the steam cleaner to vacuum it dry. I set a fan under the carpet and let it sit until dry.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end.
The carpet was better but it still smelled like urine. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I bought another bottle of Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer and saturated it and let it sit for a few hours again then vacuumed it dry with the steam cleaner again. I propped the carpet and pad up and left a fan under it for a good 36 hours to make sure it dried completely.
IT WORKED!
Sure, if you get down and stuff your face right into the carpet you can smell a faint hint of urine, but it’s acceptable and it means I’ve delayed replacement of our carpet for now. At least it no longer smells like a kennel when you first walk into the house.
Would I recommend this product? Absolutely! It definitely saved us! I purchased mine at Petsmart on Route 4, but you could also order online or find it at another local pet store.
If you know of another product that works, let us know!

I don’t know if this works for dog urine but it works for cat urine..hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda and a drop of dish detergent.. Some times you have to do it twice but it neutralizes the odor..
